Being a Blues Fan 101

Today is the day, North America! The NHL playoffs are officially underway and hockey fans nationwide could not be more excited!

The pace, level of intensity, checks, arguments and scuffles are taken to a whole other level for the rest of the season. Every game counts and any team can win on any given day.

And if you’re from St. Louis, you are either so pumped you want to pee your pants with excitement because the Blues are in the playoffs this year OR you are scrambling to figure out how to be a Blues fan because you have never paid attention to the team. 🙂 Don’t fear! For am I here to guide you to a few St. Louis Blues traditions.

Some stats:

  • The Blues are good this year. They were in the running of receiving the President’s Trophy for quite awhile. They finished first in the Central, second in the West and third in the League. Not too shabby.
  • The Blues made the playoffs for the first time in five years in 2009. They were swept in 4 games vs. Vancouver (damn rioters). We’re back.
  • The Blues were the first team this season to clinch a playoff spot.

Now for the good stuff:

  • Don’t wear red to a game. Don’t even think about it. Nobody cares that it’s a Cardinals shirt. Red in the Scottrade = Blackhawks or Red Wings. If you don’t have blues attire, wear a Blue shirt!
  • At the end of the National Anthem, Blues fans say “and the home, of the BLUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUES” instead of “brave.” You’ll see. Participate. It’s fun.
  • When we get a power play, do this dance. I don’t know why or how it was invented, but people do it.
  • When we score a goal, stand up, cheer, go crazy and high-five your neighbors. That’s one of my favorite parts of the game.
  • After we score a goal, the Towel Man will go to his spot and make the crowd go crazy before throwing his Blues towels. (Chances of you catching it are very slim.)
  • Follow the hashtag #stlblues if you are on Twitter. You’ll “meet” some great fans that way. Blues blogger, David at has a list of writers, players and fans to follow. (Ahem, not on your list David!)
  • Beer is expensive, but they have a deal on popcorn and soda for $13.50 that includes unlimited free refills.
  • After the game when you walk through the parking garage or around downtown, people will honk their horn three times to the phrase, “Let’s Go Blues!” Cheer when they do that. Feel free to honk away as you drive home.

There ya have it! A few little hints to help you become the best Blues fan out there. I hope you all enjoy the game as much as us passionate fans do!

What do you think Blues fans? Any other things people should know? Comment and let me know – I’ll add them in!

(P.S. If you can’t watch the games (TV schedule here) you can tune into KMOX radio!)

And now a little something to engage all my lady non-sport-watching readers: I bought my first pair of wedges yesterday and I keep looking at them. I’m in love.

  1. I LOVE THAT YOU LOVE HOCKEY! No one else gets it. The playoffs get my adrenaline pumping like nothing else. I’m a die-hard Devils fan, so I’ve literally been draining my savings account these past few weeks as we inch closer and closer to the cup. WORTH IT!

So glad I found your blog!
