My Favorite Binge TV Shows

Ever since Kevin and I got Netflix (and by “got” I mean mooch off of my parent’s account), we have done your typical binging on TV shows. Unhealthy? Sure. Fun? Absolutely!

This has been a pretty low-key week in terms of house projects, recipes, etc. so I thought I’d share some of my favorite Netflix shows, as well as my completely unprofessional rating.

Parenthood

Starting with possibly the best TV show ever here (besides Friends). I had no idea how good Parenthood was until I decided to try a few episodes out on Netflix. Well, let me just say that it took me an embarrassingly small number of weeks to watch all of the episodes. Words cannot express how good this show is and if it’s not renewed for a season six, I’m not sure what I’ll do. NBC – are you listening to me? RENEW PARENTHOOD. Kristina Braverman is my hero. Just take my word for it. Young or old. Man or woman. This show has it all. And bring the tissues. Like five boxes of ’em.

Friday Night Lights

Two words. Tim Riggins. Two more words. Texas Forever. A close second to my favorite Parenthood, this is another one of those “feel good” shows that has you rooting for so many characters. I aspire to be like Tammy Taylor when I grow up.

FNL

House of Cards

Kevin and I counted down the days to Valentine’s Day this year not because we wanted to celebrate the infamous Hallmark holiday, but because we couldn’t wait to start the second season of HOC. This show is so intense and had us completely hooked. We cannot wait for season three!

Breaking Bad

This show had Kev and I watching TV like mad. We were determined to catch up on all the episodes so we could watch the series finale live with the rest of the world. It was a tough mission but we completed it and it was well worth it. The whole show is genius and will go down as one of our favorite shows of all time.

Gossip Girl

All of the above TV shows were shows that Kevin and I watched together. He hasn’t seen a single episode of Gossip Girl, nor does he have the desire to, so this was one that I watched on my own. I watched GG since its beginning but have rewatched the series via Netflix a couple of times. (I know, I have an issue with rewatching TV shows and movies.) GG is a totally sleazy, unnecessary TV show but it’s addicting and entertaining. I give it two thumbs up.

Scandal

Scandal, another show that I watched by myself, had me hooked after one episode. I just couldn’t stop watching because I had to find out what was going to happen next. It’s not my favorite or anything, but it keeps my attention enough to watch each week.

Bates Motel

Our friends convinced us to watch this show and while Kevin really enjoyed it, it was a little too scary for my liking. I’m a big fat chicken and stay away from horror, thriller and suspense-type shows and movies. I watched the whole first season and am intrigued to find out what happens, but I may skip out on season two since I found it a bit scary.

The West Wing

This show was popular before I was old enough to understand half of the topics discussed, but it was our first show that we Netflixed and I’m so glad that we did. A total gem, brilliant writing, awesome cast and all-around great show. It took us quite awhile to get through it because there are a lot of seasons, but it’s well worth the time.

SO NOW…

Tell me, what are your favorite Netflix (or Hulu, HBO GO, Amazon Prime, etc.) TV shows to binge watch?

What should our next show be? (Don’t say Dexter or The Office – I’ve already ruled those out.)

Have you seen any of the shows I wrote about? Did you like them?

  1. I wasn’t allowed to watch a whole lot of tv growing up, so when I got Netflix a bunch of my friends convinced me to watch the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 1. I won’t admit how long it took me to get through the later seasons… Ditto with Veronica Mars. For more recent shows, I really enjoyed Eureka and Lost Girl (SyFy channel shows) and right now the hubs and I are working our way through the old seasons of Castle (which, sadly we have to get through Amazon, because Netflix only has them on DVD and we’re impatient :-/ ). Also, if you haven’t seen any of them, I highly recommend the newer Doctor Who shows (starting with Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper as The Doctor and Rose)!!!

    • I really want to watch Veronica Mars! I may put that on my list and bump it to the top. I’ve also heard great things about Doctor Who. I’ll check ’em out. Thanks, Sally!

  2. -Mad Men-
    – Freaks and Geeks- Only one season, unfortunate it got cancelled.
    -Lost
-Orange is the New Black- Just watch this in 5 days. Pretty good representation of the prison system, really entertaining. Second season comes out in early June, so you can watch one season, take a break, then right back at it in a month.

    • I need to get into Mad Men, especially because I work in a similar industry. Freaks and Geeks is SO GOOD. I didn’t know it was on Netflix! I’ve heard good things about Orange is the New Black so that may be next on my list. Thanks, Tommy!

  3. The bf and I have binged watched 8 seasons of 24, 4 seasons of Battlestar Galactica, 5 seasons of Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Arrested Development, Friday Night Lights, Heroes, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, a couple of seasons of How I Met Your Mother….all in the past year.

We were actually talking about how we’re currently not binge watching anything, and how it feels weird. It’s finally starting to warm up in Chicago, so maybe we’ll start going outside 🙂

    • I love Nashville too, which is weird because I don’t like country music at all. I’ve heard good things about The Americans but I don’t know how to watch it! If I find a way, I’ll let you know!
